Details
DOSIO, Giovanni Antonio and Sebastiano di RE (engraver). Roma. Rome: Bartolomeo Faleti, 1 January 1561.

Engraved bird's-eye view of Rome on a full Royal sheet, 415 x 549mm. The title set in a strapwork cartouche, dedication and imprint set in a 'tablet' cartouche, index of principal buildings set along the lower margin. (Trimmed to plate mark, remargined, fold neatly repaired at head and foot, old guard on verso.)

An early and rare view of Rome. Dosio, an architect and sculptor active in Rome, is famous for his Urbis Romae Aedificiorum illustrium supersunt reliquiae, which was published in Florence in 1569. 'Ce recueil de vues est un des plus importants parus au XVIe siecle' (Olschki Choix). Dosio's faithful recording of the ancient ruins in Rome was very different from the efforts by his contemporaries, who usually attempted some form of reconstruction in their images and accounts. Tooley 488, recording ten other copies; Frutaz CXVII; watermark not legible.
