PROVENANCE:
With a 2-page manuscript note to front free endpaper, affirming that: "This translation of Longus was published by the celebrated Paul Louis Courier, and was printed at his expense at Florence sixty copies only having been printed for presents to his friends." The note includes the transcription of a letter sent to A. M. Firmin Didot by A. M. Boissonade emphasising the importance and rarity of the copy he is forwarding, and also transcriptions of letters from Courier himself to Madame de Humboldt and M. Renouard. Cypher dated 1830 to pastedown and bookplate of the Marquis of Crewe.
