Lot Essay

Sometimes attributed to Pierre Loiseleur, sieur de Villiers, though not attributed to him by Voet nor listed among his works by Cioranesco. A Dutch edition of the pamphlet was published in the same year. It concerns the attempt by Jean Jaureguy to kill the Prince of Orange on 18 March 1582, and the convictions that followed. The pistol used in the assassination attempt only inflicted "a not too serious wound. Jaureguy was slain on the spot. The employer of Jaureguy, the Spaniard Gaspar de Anastro, who knew of the complot, had left the city in time. But two other accomplices or taken for such, the Spaniard Antonio Venero and the monk Antoine Timmerman, were taken prisoner, condemned and executed" (Voet).
