A Chinese armorial dish
painted and gilt with quarterly arms surmounted by a dexter hand holding a dagger, bearing the mottoes 'Pro Patria et Libetate' and 'Contendo' within a border of thistles and two crowns -- 9in. (23cms) diam, Qianlong, (enamels slightly faded, small chips to underside of rim and tiny hairline rim crack).
See Illustration.
The arms are of Michie but are similar to MacDonald. The arms denote a kinship with the MacDonald Clan. The two crowns allude to the Kingdom of the Isles and the Kingdom of Man, which were held by the MacDonalds in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.
See 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain', D.S Howard, p. 379.
