Lot Essay

The Gimbel brothers of Strassbourg, George and Charles, appear to have come from an Alsacian family of watercolour and miniature painters. They were among the most successful copyists of early fans in the 1840s. Later they painted fans [fec] to their own designs [inv]. This fan is probably painted by George who was still exhibiting at the Salon in 1880.
