A lace fan, of Brussels point de gaze, worked with flowers, the mother of pearl sticks carved and pierced with trophies of love and backed with mother of pearl - 11in.(28cm.), circa 1871 - in remains of box; and a Spanish Marriage, a fan, the satin leaf painted with a marriage scene, with tortoiseshell sticks with monogram K.V. - 14in. Provenance
The first fan is sold with a note stating that it was "presented to my father, John Wesley Allison of Philadelphia, to my mother at their marriage in 1871 ... It was loaned [together with a shawl of similar lace] to a cousin of mine to wear on the night that the Brooklyn Theatre was burned when Kate Claxton was playing "The Two Orphans". The shawl was burned along with the relative of my mother's. The fan has been exhibited at The Metroplitan Museum and also at several exhibitions of fine French lace work in the city. The fan and shawl cost $5,000.
