A Kholmogory walrus ivory chess set, second half 18th century
in red stained and natural hues, the red stained side in oriental dress wearing turbans, the other in quasi-antique warriors dress wearing plumed helmets, the royal pieces throned, the white king and queen shown holding swords with their feet resting on cushions, the bishops similarly throned, the knights on rearing steeds, the rooks as elephants with mahouts, the pawns as standing foot soldiers holding swords, the kings 4in. (10.1cm.) and 3½in. (8.8cm.) high, the pawns 2½in. (6.3cm.) high
