An oak chest, French, early 16th century
with associated hinged lid bearing a brass presentation plate, the sides with twin linen fold panels, the front with five panels, the central panel with bunch of flowers in a ewer and a dove to the upper right corner, flanked by figures beneath canopies, the outer panels depicting berried foliage issuing from the mouth of a winged creature, on stile feet -- 64in. (163cm.) wide

Lot Essay

The ewer in the central panel is a particularly good representation of a jug of this period. The flanking panels probably depict The Anunciation, with Mary on the left and an angel on the right with the dove of peace in the upper corner of the central panel
