Lot Essay

Turned chairs of this type, with multiple turnings on the uprights and with decorative spindle turnings on the arms, have counterparts in some 18th century chairs from the Netherlands. It is probable that chairs of this type were made in England, particularly in East Anglia, by immigrant craftsmen from Holland. See John T. Kirk American Furniture and the British Tradition to 1830, 1982, p.236 for other examples.
