An oak panelled chest, English, late 16th/early 17th century
the plank top with incised trailing scrolls and small rosettes forming a border and central rectangle carved with the initials W.C., above a channelled frieze inlaid with the lettering Before Thou Will Pretend Remember What Will Be Ye End, with three panels containing a geometrical motif previously inlaid and flanked by fluted uprights, on stile feet, the left stile branded W.C., the sides twin panelled, the far right front panel previously repaired -- 56½in. (144cm.) wide
