(N)3198-1941, the pillar plate numbered (N)3198 1941, Earnshaw escapement, Hamilton spring detent with jewelled pallet, uncut stainless steel balance rim with invar cross-arm and helical balance spring, brass bowl and gimbal in two-tier mahogany box, the lower section with plaque inscribed HAMILTON WATCH CO., LANCASTER, P.A., U.S.A; with oak guard box

Lot Essay

The present chronometer is one of 11,000 or so made by the Hamilton Watch Co. beginning in 1940. The name Hamilton was selected to honour Andrew Hamilton, the original owner of the land at Lancaster which was gifted to him by the heirs of William Penn.
