Lot Essay

The panels on the present clock are typical of the high quality Limoges enamels being used on carriage clocks at the end of the 19th century. Renaissance figures - especially in the guise of the hunt - were particularly popular, as this and the following two lots demonstrate, with enamellers consciously harking back to the earliest days of their art. A very similar example is illustrated in Fanelli & Terwilliger Fine Carriage Clocks, Clock Trade Enterprises, New York 1987, pp.196-197.
