Lot Essay

The inclusion of the unusual mixture of plane table and other instruments suggests that this compendium may well have been prepared by special order to a mining surveyor. The inclusion of a thermometer (tube lacking) is unusual, but the high quality of the compendium suggests that it was prepared for a surveyor of substance. The inclusion of a French square leads to the possibility that the surveyor ordering this compendium was already in possession of some instruments and thus asked George (or Dudley?) to assemble the compendium for his own requirements.
