Details
A Swiss/German guild box and cover,
in the form of a seated winged ox* on an oblong base with ball feet and an armorial shield below his neck, the base inscribed "Dissen Lucas Zu Ehren Hab Ich Hans Smenickhoff Von Collen Dem Lublichen Ampte Der Glaser Thun Vorehren 1603", the shield engraved with the armorial of a glassworkers guild or company and the initials, "H.S.V.C", (presumably for Hans Smenickhoff von Collen [Coln]), makers mark only struck twice on the base "H.H" conjoined in an oval punch, unascribed, possibly a 19th century replica of a 17th century item - 10cm long x 10cm high, 9oz.
* The winged ox is emblematic of St Luke, (hence Lucas) who is the the patron saint of glassworkers/glassblowers. The inscription suggests that the item was given to the glassworkers/glassblowers guild of Thun, Switzerland.
