Lot Essay

Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) was born in Belgium where he was a pioneer of socialism. His political ideas are reflected in his work which normally includes people at their daily work. His house in Brussels at 59, rue de l'Abbaye, is now the Musée Meunier which contains many of Meunier's works. (J. Mackay, The Dictionary of Western Sculptors in Bronze, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 261)
