Lot Essay

July 1792:"Madura is a place of great antiquity, justly celebrated for its Hindoo temples and choultries". The first two plates depict the gateway and choultry (colonnade) of the Great Temple of Madurai which was built by the Nayyak dynasty in the seventeenth century.
