Lot Essay

Kanpur, (previously known as Cawnpore) is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh. During the 1857 mutiny the city was the headquarters of a large Indian garrison. The exhausted forces, led by Sir High Wheeler, surrendered to Nana Sahib, only to be brutally massacred at Sati Chanra Ghat. Over 100 women and children were imprisoned in a small room and just before the relief arrived they were murdered and thrown down a well.
