Lot Essay

Chinnery settled first in Madras, before moving to Calcutta in 1807. He left India for China in 1825, leaving his wife, and his debtors behind him.

A smaller watercolour of this subject was sold at Christie's London in the Visions of India sale, 25 May 1995, lot 165, (£2,530).
