Lot Essay

Sambhunath Pandit was the first Indian Judge of the High Court, Calcutta, holding the post from 1863 until his death in 1867. An authority on Hindu law and questions of land tenure, he was a Kashmir Brahman, whose family had been established in Bengal for several generations. Educated at Lucknow, Benares and the Oriental Seminary, he became a senior law professor at the Presidency College in 1855 and a senior Government Pleader in 1861.
