FANNY PARKS [MRS PARLBY]

Wanderings of a pilgrim, in search of the Picturesque, during four-and-twenty years in the East; with revelations of life in the Zenãna ... illustrated with sketches from nature. London: Pelham Richardson, 1850.

2 volumes, large 8° (277 x 186mm). Lithographic 'elevation of the Himalaya Mountains' bound at end of vol. II, 49 lithographic plates comprising 4 chromolithographs, with additional varnish and hand-colouring, 8 tinted, and 17 coloured, a few with tissue guards. (Lacking list of plates in vol. II, supplied in photocopy, some occasional light browning and spotting). Modern half calf, spine gilt in compartments with red and black lettering-pieces.

Fanny Parks's name is given on the title-page and on many plates in Arabic, her exact involvement in their creation is unspecified. It has been assumed (see Abbey Travel) that, despite the presence of her signature, many of the plates are not actually the work of her hand. They were, nevertheless, integral to the whole project. Some work has been done on the artists involved, including the so-called 'mysterious J.W.', but none has yet been satisfactorily identified. Major Abbey's copy had the cross-section of the Himalayas in a pocket at the end of volume one, whereas in this copy it is correctly positioned (according to the printed plate list) as plate 50, and bound at the end of volume II.
