Lot Essay

An especially handsome copy of this rare and important work which is reputed to have been Griffin's own copy. The work concentrates on the important buildings at Gwalior, Sanchi and Khajuraho together with a few others in Rewah and Bundelkund. Griffin was much concerned with the neglect of India's architectural heritage by both the indiginous rulers and by the British. He pursuaded the Government of India to finance this major work and achieved a good deal, in supporting some rulers such as the Maharajas of Gwalior and of Dhar and the Begum of Bhopal, in their willingness to spend money on the preservation of monuments.
