A MING BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE BOX AND COVER
JIAJING SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The box of square section with fluted corners, the domed cover painted in strong blue tones with a medallion containing a leaping five-clawed dragon amidst clouds, surrounded by four floral blooms with curled stems, the sloping rounded sides decorated alternately with a phoenix and a stork amidst stylised clouds, the four corners painted with pairs of peaches, all above a key-fret band repeated on the lower section of the box, above matching decoration (hairline crack to cover, glaze flakes to extremities)
5 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (14 x 14cm.)

Lot Essay

A smaller box (9.3 cm.) of the same shape, also bearing a Jiajing mark and of the period, but decorated with children at play, is in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Qinghua Ciqi Zhan, 1988, p. 74, no. 50.
