A RARE LARGE LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF LUOHAN
YUAN/EARLY MING DYNASTY

The figure seated with both hands embracing the raised left leg, the head shaven with pendulous ears, the full face with an urna formed by a lotus-bud between the eyes downcast in contemplation, the long robes decorated around the collar with incised cloud-pattern, falling in folds over the legs to reveal his upturned slippers, the garment edges defined with a band of floral-scrolls, the back incised with a devotional inscription, traces of lacquer remaining, area of bronze missing around helm of robe
26 in. (66 cm.) high, seated on a wooden stool

Lot Essay

The inscription can be translated as 'Commissioned by the devotees Wu Sibi with wives Chen and Guo, and family'.
