This is the original prototype lifeboat compass which was submitted to the U.S. Coast Guard by John E. Hand & Sons. This is one of three prototype designs which was accepted by the U.S.C.G. for use on lifeboats aboard cruise ships sailing under the American flag. Until recently, the only U.S.C.G. approved compass was manufactured John E. Hand & Sons. Included with this lot are 3 original mounting brackets, 7 x 6 x 6in. (18.4 x 15.2 x 15.2cm.)
