A FRENCH PRISONER OF WAR MODEL OF 118 GUN FIRST-RATE SHIP OF THE LINE
LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The hull of this model is built up with a wooden plug and planked over the hull and deck in strips of bone which have been fastened with copper pins. There are 118 cannons of turned bone (some are ivory replacements). The masts, bowsprit and the spars are all hand turned and appear to be of ivory. The trees and the tops are also of ivory. Other details include anchors, windlass, the belfry, pin and fife rails, ladders, deck rings, skylight, lanterns. The figurehead is of a man with turban and a cutless with some risidual polychrome. The ship's boats are also carved from single pieces of bone and have risidual polychrome. The quarter galleries are carved and pierced from bone, and the transom balconies and ornamentation are from bone and ivory with some risidual polychroming. The model is rigged for retractable cannons (not working) , 40 x 15 x 30in. (101.6 x 38.1 x 77.4cm.) (model dimensions).
