AN INLAID AND LACQUERED-WOOD BOX (JAGAE HAEM)

Rectangular, with rear-hinged top, inlaid on the top in mother-of-pearl with a medallion of four auspicious characters centering a double-happiness character which is bordered by a pair of flying cranes, fruiting peach boughs and small clouds, a slightly larger cloud cluster in each corner, decorated on the front panel in inlaid mother-of-pearl with auspicious plants and animals, on the side panels with crabs and carp below flowering bushes and rock, and on the back panel with a stand of flowers, rock and grass; the surrounding surfaces covered by black lacquer; fitted with metal mounts, lockplate and lock, the interior lined with bright pink paper, base undecorated
