BERTRAND ANNOUNCES THE EMPEROR'S DEATH TO NAPOLEON'S UNCLE.

In a letter dated the day after Napoleon's death, Bertrand writes: "...The Emperor Napoleon breathed his last at 5:49 yesterday afternoon...I beg you to break the sad news to Madame (his mother, Letizia), the shock will indeed be severe. In the midst of the poignant grief of her august family I do not speak of my own..."

Bertrand (1773-1844) had served with Napoleon in Italy, Egypt, Syria, and most of the subsequent battles up to 1814, accompanied Napoleon to Elba, at Waterloo, and into exile on St. Helena. After Napoleon's death he escorted the Emperor's remains back to Paris.
