1980 BMW M1
Chassis No. WBS5991000.4301326
Black with black leather and checked cloth interior
Engine: six-cylinder in-line, double overhead camshaft, 3,453cc, 277bhp at 6,500rpm; Gearbox: AF five-speed; Suspension: four-wheel independent coil and shock; Brakes: four-wheel vented disc. Left hand drive.
The amazing BMW M1 was the result of combined efforts from BMW Motorsports and designer Giugaro. It was from the beginning the perfect blend of Italian style and reliable German performance. These traits, however, were not the priority of BMW. The car was created because of homologation rules requiring the construction of 400 examples in order to compete in the sports-racing category. The simple goal was to build a car faster than the Porsche 911, a dominating competitor in this racing class. The result was beyond simply a faster car, it was a beautiful automobile that drove better than any mid-engine car built at that time, largely due to the fact that the suspension geometry was optimum, making for a very balanced car.
The dohc 24 valve engine was faultless and provided a silky smooth power band all the way up to its red line. Its horse power rating of 277 is considered by most to be conservative, as the same engine produces over 320bhp in the more catylist-burdened M5 sedan of today. In any case, the engine powered the M1s to several victories in the sport/racing class. After attaining the racing success, BMW halted the expensive production of mid-engined supercars in favor of less expensive applications of the gained technology. This technology lived on through BMW Motorsports in the form of the highly acclaimed M5 and M6 sedans. In total, only 456 M1s were built - each with the legacy of perfect engineering and design.
The M1 offered here is very unusual in that it is the only known example finished by the factory in this attractive black with black color scheme. It is described by the vendor, who is the second owner, as being in excellent overall condition having covered just under 10,000 miles from new.
All items including the airconditioning are complete and functioning; and the M1 comes with DOT and EPA documents that are available for inspection.
