The finned fantasies of Virgil Exner at Chrysler Corporation were given fascinating production form in 1957. Suddenly it's 1960! Three years ahead... four new Plymouth lines with 1960 Flight Sweep Styling...the new shape of motion! That was the brochure; the reality very nearly kept up with the hype. Certainly Plymouth had majestically swept past the previous acknowledged style leader Harley Earl at General Motors. Earl responded with his own fighter-jet inspired chrome dreams and a classic era opened.

There always had to be a supercar in any major manufacturer's range in those days; Plymouth's was the Fury - a two-door hardtop or convertible, aimed at the competing Impala and Galaxie - as distinctive inside as out, with swivelling bucket seats and a decoration-only spare wheel cover set into the rear deck, Imperial style. But General Motors set a killing pace; Chrysler Corporation's market share slipped. By 1963 Exner's day was over, even as a consultant. He was replaced by Elwood Engle from Ford and his crisp new ideas. For 1965 the Plymouth line was given an extra three inches to become 119 inches in wheelbase and all bore the Fury name, although Sport Fury still designated the top-of-the-line high performer with bucket seats, center console and special trim. With fresh, straightforward lines, the Sport Fury was an attractive car. Its merits were recognized when a 383 cu. in. V8 convertible was chosen as the Official Pace Car for the 1965 Indianapolis 500 race. As ever, there was a factory supplied, dealer fitted, high performance package that lifted output to a respectable 325bhp.

This Sport Fury was purchased new by a lady school teacher who was attracted by its impressive performance. It is described as in good running condition and has recently been fitted with new upholstery and a new set of tires.
