Two waistcoats were initially made, one each for Fornasetti and Ponti. Each waistcoat is decorated with the actual tools of each man's trade, as if they could reach into the trompe l'oeil pockets and extract a ruler or pen. cf. Suzanne Slesin, "In a Solo Show, The Wit and Whimsy of Piero Fornasetti", The New York Times, December 21, 1989, p.C8 for an illustration of a later waistcoat.
