Lot Essay
The present work can be compared to two paintings by de Heusch which derive from a composition by Salvator Rosa in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Inv. no. 34.137. The first with its pendant a Marine landscape with Figures was offered at Christie's, London, July 8, 1994, lot 5 (52,100=$80,234) and can be dated to circa 1690 when the artist was visiting Rome. A second painting in which the landscape with figures are subtly varied is in the Accademia, Vienna, Inv. no. 290, together with its pendant, Inv. no. 289 (see A. Busiri Vici, Jacob de Heusch, 1997, pp. 159 and 176, nos. 58 and 72).
