The unusual curved form of these seats indicate that they were part of a suite which when assembled would form a circular arrangement for an intimate boudoir or a garden pavillion. These intimate settings were very much in vogue in the eighteenth century for such important princely patrons as the duc de Choiseul at Chanteloup and Comtesse de Provence at Montreuil.
