A PAIR OF ITALIAN ROCOCO GILTWOOD ARMCHAIRS
Circa 1740, probably Venice
Each cartouche-form back and serpentine seat covered in pale blue velvet, within a foliate and floral carved frame centering a stylized shell, with foliate carved downscrolled arm supports above a similarly carved seatrail and foliate-carved legs (2)

Lot Essay

The collection of Nancy Dollar which was largely formed by Taylor for her San Francisco home, was sold in these Rooms, 27 March 1997 have These exuberantly carved armchairs closely relate to a Venetian armchair in the collection of count Longoni, illustrated in S. Levy, Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento, 1964, vil. I, fig. 5. They once formed part of the collection of the legendary California decorator Michael Taylor.
