Lot Essay

The distinctive inlay and design of this commode relate it to the work of the Milanese intarsiatore Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814). A writing table by Maggiolini in the Museo Artistico, Milan, the top with border of confronting griffins similar to the frieze of this commode, is illustrated in G. Morazzoni,Il Mobile Intarsiato di Giuseppe Maggiolini, Milan, 1957, fig. XLIV. A related commode with virtually identical inlay framing the central panels and forming the uprights of the front was sold in these Rooms, 24 September 1997, lot 432.
