Lot Essay

This striking table of richly figured cherrywood, with radially veneered top and geometrically stepped platform, derives from a design by the celebrated Viennese cabinet-maker and designer Josef Danhauser (1780-1829). A related table appears in a watercolor dated 1838 by Amalia Attems, The Living Room of the Widowed Countess Marianna Attems (illustrated in A. Wilkie, Biedermeier, 1987, p.25, fig. 13), while another table with similar radially veneered top and stepped base is illustrated op. cit., p. 89, fig. 66.
