Lot Essay

In the late 1850's, James Woodward (d.1888) inherited his father Thomas Woodward's manufactory at Burton-on-Kent which had been established by John Hunt in 1790. This vase is executed in Woodward's celebrated cane-colored ware (see L.Jewitt, Ceramic Art of Great Britain, London, 1883, p.376).
