Lot Essay
The mirrors' softened rectangular shape and carved trailing foliage relates closely to the designs of cabinetmaker and carver John Linnell (d. 1796) of Berkeley Square (see H. Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell in the Victoria and Albert Museum', Furniture History, 1969, fig. 46, and H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, 1980, vol. II, figs. 189, 190, and 191). A mirror with similarly carved foliate devices sold in these Rooms, 30 April 1997, lot 141.
