Max Kuehne traveled throughout Spain from 1914-1917, often with his friend and fellow painter Ernest Lawson. Kuehne found inspiration in the sunlight, landscape and architecture of Granada and Segovia, and captured many of these views on small, easily transportable panels. While Kuehne is known primarily for his pictures of Gloucester and Maine, the artist's Spanish pictures attracted significant attention. In 1922 Archer M. Huntington acquired thirty-two of these works. Each painting is accompanied by its original frame made by Max Kuehne.
