Lot Essay

In 1926 Ila Mae McAfee moved to Taos, New Mexico, where she became a member of the Taos Art Association. During the 1930s McAfee contributed to the Work Projects Administration efforts as a mural artist. At the Crossing, New Mexico is a quintessential example of the artist's work, depicting both the animals and the landscape for which she was best known.
