Lot Essay

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1874, Foote studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where he met the Impressionist painter Frederick Frieseke. After studing in Paris in the late 1890s, Foote became a member of the Old Lyme artist colony in Connecticut, and the National Academy of Design in New York. Young Italian Girl was executed in 1914.
