Lot Essay

In the early 1920s Edgar Payne traveled to Europe. Captivated by the sea, the artist began to paint scenes of ships on the open water, ocean coasts and boat-filled harbors in an Impressionist style. His most significant European works were executed in France and were met with immediate artistic and financial success.
The Adriatic Sea, as well as the following two lots, Coast near Quiberon and Breton Tuna Boats at Sea, were given by Payne to his physician, Dr. Lawrence F. White, as payment for his services.
