In 1931, having studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Arthur Grover Rider moved to Laguna Beach, California. Inspired by the climate and light of Southern California, Rider became an dedicated disciple of Impressionist color theory. In addition to painting San Juan Capistrano and Laguna, Rider also worked as a scenic artist for Twentieth Century Fox and Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios.
In the present painting, the careful juxtaposition of color convincingly captures the intense sunlight and vibrant shade of the Laguna coast.
