Born in England to a family of marine painters, James E. Buttersworth traveled to New York around 1847, where he remained until the end of his life. Most noteable for capturing the grandeur of maritine life during the great era of commerce in the 19th century, Two British Frigates Passing Each Other is highly characteristic of the artist's work.
