2o (342 x 213 mm). Reproductions of original woodcuts (including folding plate). Vellum over wooden boards, uncut and largely unopened (some minor soiling), buckram slipcase. Provenance: Louis E. Stern, presentation inscription from the editor and signed by both editor and translator on the front free endpaper: "To Louis E. Stern With kind Regards of Herbert Hoover," and signed below by Mrs. Hoover. Bookplate of Herbert Hoover and invitation to the White House inserted in mounted envelope on rear free endpaper (addressed to Stern).

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, PRESENATION COPY INSCRIBED BY HERBERT HOOVER AND HIS WIFE on the front free endpaper. LIMITED EDITION, one of 3000 copies printed, 1500 of which for presentation by the translators (often friends in the mining profession). Herbert Hoover was a mining engineer before entering politics and becoming the thirty-first President of the United States. His wife, and future First Lady, was a former Latin teacher and translator of this edition. Hoover 28; Norman 21.
