FIRST EDITION of the first published book on the diseases of the urinary tract, by "the father of urology" (Garrison & Morton). Diaz, about whom little is known, was appointed physician to King Philip II, and was the subject of sonnets by Lope de Vega (printed here on v) and Cervantes. The three sections of the extensive treatise are devoted to the kidney, bladder and urethra respectively. In his address to the reader (r) Diaz mentions guaiacum, a new medicine from the Spanish settlements in the New World. Derived from the sap of the lignum-vitae tree, it was introduced to Spain in 1508 and widely used in the treatment of stones and syphilis. Castiglione, p.481; Garrison-Morton 4160 (" Diaz described the 'high' (superpubic) operation for the removal of bladder stones and the urethral sound of Aldarete"); Leonardo, History of Surgery p.360; NLM/Durling 1123; Waller 2430; Norman 634.
