PAR, Ambroise (1510-1590). The Workes...Translated out of Latine and compared with the French. by Thomas Johnson. London: Thomas Cotes and R. Young, 1634.

2o (334 x 210 mm). Engraved title by Thomas Cecill and 323 woodcuts in text. (Title and two preliminary leaves ["To the Reader" and dedication] possibly supplied from another copy, a few minor marginal tears, mostly internal, occasionally crossing headline, tear repaired on Ff4 affecting a few letters.) Contemporary calf (spine ends worn, upper cover becoming detached). Provenance: "Ex Libris Dom. Fr: Tayolr," inscription on rear free endpaper.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Most of this edition was based on the first Latin edition of 1582 (made from the second edition of the French Oeuvres). The "Apologie and treatise," however, was translated directly from the French. This copy contains the presumed earlier state of the dedication, which reads: "Sir Edward Herbert, Knight of Bath." STC 19189; Norman 1640.
