2o (282 x 180 mm). Title printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece by R. Gaywood showing portrait of the author and eight symbolic figures in panels (a little darkened and brittle at edges), numerous woodcut illustrations in text. (Some browning and staining, a few leaves loose, tear crossing text on Nn2, some margins frayed slightly.) Contemporary English calf (spine ends and one corner repaired, upper joint cracked, a few other defects, new endpapers).

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of Porta's best-known work, Magiae naturalis, originally published in 1558. This compendium of 16th-century science and pseudo-science includes sections on counterfeiting gold, transmuting metals, beautifying women, strange cures, perfuming, cookery, invisible writing and more. This translation is based on the expanded edition consisting of twenty books which was published in 1589. Wing P2982; Norman 1726.
