4o (199 x 151 mm). Woodcut portrait of the author on title, woodcut inital. (Title lightly browned, some mostly marginal dampstaining and worming, slightly affecting text at end, a few leaves stained.) Modern half speckled calf, marbled boards. Provenance: Early signature and calculations on title.

FIRST EDITION of the culmination of Riese's work, and ... the best exponent of the practical arithmetic of the middle of the century in Germany" (Smith). It is considered Ries's "comprehensive work ... which far surpassed his books written at Erfurt, especially in the number of examples" (DSB). Most of the work had been completed by 1525, but the Rechenung was not published until 1550, when Elector Maurice of Saxony advanced Ries the cost for its printing. Ries surpassed his predecessors in the clear and methodical presentation of his material, and "did more than any previous author to spread knowledge of arithmetic" (DSB). Adams R-535; Smith Rara Arithmetica, pp. 250-252; Norman 1834.
