2 parts in one volume, 2o (336 x 211 mm). Woodcut printer's device on titles, woodcut portrait of the author in each part, over 400 woodcuts in text. (Lacks a8, some minor light browning.) Contemporary calf (rebacked with original spine preserved, corners repaired). Provenance: De Mercenne (signature on front free endpaper); Lon Vaillant (small stamp on title).
FIRST EDITION of the most important treatise on aquatic animals and fish published up that time. Based largely on classical authorities, in particular Aristotle, it also includes results of his own observations through experiments and anatomical investigations.
