Two parts in one volume, 2o (321 x 230 mm). Woodcut arms of the dedicatee, cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, on title-page, repeated on title for second part, 64 full-page woodcut illustrations (all in Book I). (Some very slight worming in upper margins of preliminaries just touching a few letters, lower margin repair with loss of signature number on l4, occasional light browning on some leaves.) Contemporary German vellum over pasteboard, gilt coat-of-arms on front cover (corners worn, joints cracked, some other minor defects), quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: a German count (arms with initials P.E.R.G.Z.S.L.); some underlining and marginalia in a 17th-century hand.

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the first book devoted exclusively to the anatomy of an animal, and the first monograph on horses. "Besides being one of the foundation-stones of modern veterinary medicine, it contains a description of the lesser circulation. The admirable woodcuts were inspired by those in Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica (1543)" (Garrison-Morton). FINE UNRESTORED CONDITION.
